Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana on Monday suggested three options for the settlement of the displaced people in land subsidence-hit Joshimath, officials said. Mr Khurana who heads a committee working on a settlement plan for Joshimath submitted his recommendations to a high-powered panel chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Anand Vardhan here. The first option offers a one-time settlement by providing financial assistance to the affected land/building owners, Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Kumar Sinha said at a press conference here. The number of people taken ill after allegedly consuming contaminated water in a dozen villages of Nadaun sub-division in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district rose to 535 on Sunday. People from a dozen villages, including Banh, Jandgi Gujran, Jandali Rajputan, Panyala, Pathiyalu, Niyati, Rangas Chowki Haar, Thain and Sankar have been affected by the outbreak of water-borne diseases. A 60-year-old woman was killed on Sunday allegedly by her son after she refused to give him money for alcohol, a Nagpur police station official said. The incident took place in Vandevi Nagar and the 28-year-old accused has been arrested, he said. A 35-year-old man allegedly died by suicide by jumping in front of a suburban train in Maharashtra's Thane district, a police official said on Thursday. A church official was killed and a priest seriously wounded late Wednesday when a man wielding a machete stormed two churches in southern Spain, the government said. At least 16 people, including children, have died due to gas leakage incidents in the past one week in Quetta city of Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province. On Wednesday, four children of a family died inside a mud-walled house after the gas leakage triggered an explosion in the Killi Badezai area in Quetta, police said. The bodies of a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found in a well in Rajasthan's Sirohi district on Tuesday, police said. The incident took place in Marwada Khalsa village, which comes under the Swaroopganj police station area of the district, they said. The deceased were identified as Arjun Kumar Meghwal and Inka Kumari. Police officials said the family members of the victims told them that the woman accidentally fell into the well and man jumped in to save her. The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended a man with eight gold biscuits on Sunday in North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, said a press release on Monday. The accused had been identified as Bablu Molla, added the press release. Over 2,000 letters have been sent to a post box, which is popularly called "post box to heaven" where friends and family leave notes for their dead loved ones. Six people lost their lives on Sunday evening when a dumper truck collided with a car on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway in the Achalganj police station area in Unnao, officials said. Following the collision, the car got dragged for some distance and hit a woman and her daughter before falling into a ditch, Superintendent of Police Siddharth Shankar Meena said, adding the incident occurred around 7 pm. Two persons died on the spot, while the rest of them died of their injuries at a hospital.
