JNU Students' Union Alleges Attack By BJP-Linked Body ABVP

The Left-controlled JNU Students' Union on Sunday alleged that the ABVP attacked some students after a march seeking justice for an IIT Bombay student who died by suicide. The ABVP has denied the charge. The RSS-affiliated ABVP accused the Left-backed student outfits of "insulting" Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) organised seeking justice for IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki. Solanki, 18, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on February 12, but his family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination. In a statement, the JNUSU said, "ABVP has once again resorted to attacking students.... This was done soon after a candlelight march in solidarity with the call by Darshan Solanki's father.... ABVP does this once again to derail the movement against caste discriminatio...

In Pics: A Turkish Village Split In Two By Devastating Earthquake

Image
The small, grey house in southern Turkey that once looked out onto the road might appear untouched by last week's huge earthquake but it is now one floor lower. Surrounding the building in Demirkopru village, home to 1,000 people, are bits of debris floating in murky water, broken pavements and lopsided houses. The February 6 earthquake and its aftershocks that ravaged swathes of Turkey and Syria and killed more than 44,000 people has split Demirkopru in two. "The houses sank four metres (13 feet)," said Mahir Karatas, a 42-year-old farmer and owner of the grey house. "The ground went up and down." Half a dozen buildings, close to Karatas' house, seem to have suffered the wrath of God. The body of a black and white cow is stuck in dried mud inside what remains of a farm shed. Fortunately, no one died in Demirkopru despite the heavy damage, but some were injured. Rescue efforts in Hatay province have largely focused on Antakya, an ancient city that h...

"Irresponsible": US's Warning To China In First Meet Since 'Spy' Balloon

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China not to repeat its "irresponsible act" of sending spy balloons into American airspace, as he held rare talks late Saturday with China's top diplomat Wang Yi. The highly anticipated meeting of the two senior officials came on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing. The US has been in a state of alarm since a huge white balloon from China was spotted over a series of secret nuclear weapons sites, before being shot down just off the east coast on February 4. The incident led Blinken to abruptly call off a rare trip to China. Beijing denies it uses spy balloons and says the craft was for weather research. Subsequently it accused Washington of sending its own espionage balloons over Chinese territory, which the US has denied. During their encounter Saturday, Blinken "directly spoke to the unacceptable violation of US sovereignty and international law by (Chi...

"Would You Pray To Find A Dead Body?": Turkey's Tragic Reality As Deaths Top 46,000

As his bulldozer claws at the rubble of buildings destroyed by this month's earthquake, operator Akin Bozkurt consoles himself that by finding bodies he gives family members the chance to have a funeral for loved ones and a grave where they can mourn. "Would you pray to find a dead body?" he asked. "We do...to deliver the body to the family." Bozkurt, 42, travelled to Kahramanmaras, the southern Turkish city closest to the epicentre of the devastating quake 12 days ago from his home town of Kayseri, 250 km (155 miles) north, to help with the demolition of destroyed buildings. "You recover a body from under tonnes of rubble. Families are waiting with hope...they want to have a burial ceremony. They want a grave," Bozkrut said. According to Islamic tradition, the dead should be buried as quickly as possible. At a graveyard in the city, the thousands of new graves vastly outnumbered those which predated the earthquake, underlining the scale of the ca...

Turkey Finds New Survivor 278 Hours After Massive Quake That Killed 41,000

Turkish rescuers on Friday pulled a 45-year-old man from rubble nearly 12 days after a devastating quake claimed tens of thousands of lives. Teams have been finding survivors all week despite them being stuck for so long under the rubble in freezing weather, although their numbers have dropped to just a handful in the past few days. The man, Hakan Yasinoglu, was rescued 278 hours after the 7.8-magnitude tremor in badly hit Hatay, a southern province near the Syrian border. Images on social media showed rescuers gingerly carrying a stretcher with the man through the ruins of a flattened building. He was tied down to the stretcher to avoid a fall, and covered with a golden thermal jacket. He was immediately placed in a waiting ambulance and whisked away. His face could not be seen, and unlike other late rescues, where teams rejoiced or applauded, the mood on the ground seemed sombre. Three other people were rescued late Thursday and early Friday, including a 14-year-old boy, with ...

How Case Against YouTube Involving ISIS May "Alter The Way Internet Works"

In 2021, a California state court threw out a feminist blogger's lawsuit accusing Twitter Inc of unlawfully barring as "hateful conduct" posts criticizing transgender people. In 2022, a federal court in California tossed a lawsuit by LGBT plaintiffs accusing YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc, of restricting content posted by gay and transgender people. These lawsuits were among many scuttled by a powerful form of immunity enshrined in US law that covers internet companies. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 frees platforms from legal responsibility for content posted online by their users. In a major case to be argued at the US Supreme Court on Tuesday, the nine justices will address the scope of Section 230 for the first time. A ruling weakening it could expose internet companies to litigation from every direction, legal experts said. "There's going to be more lawsuits than there are atoms in the universe," law professor Eric Goldman of th...

UK Man Accused Of Hacking Biden, Obama's Twitter Accounts To Be Extradited

A Spanish court approved Friday the extradition to the United States of a British man suspected of hacking the Twitter accounts of leading public figures including presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Police arrested Joseph James O'Connor in July 2021 in the southern city of Estepona which is home to a large number of Britons. He faces multiple charges in connection with the July 2020 hack of over 130 Twitter accounts, including those of then-Democratic presidential candidate Biden. The accounts of former President Barack Obama, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla boss Elon Musk, who now owns Twitter, were also hit. US officials allege O'Connor hijacked the celebrity accounts and then asked followers of them to send bitcoin to an account, promising to double their money. Spain's National Court said on Friday that he is also suspected of hacking the Snapchat account of a unnamed public figure and then threatening to publish naked pictures of him unless he was fi...

Human Error Suspected Behind Nepal Plane Crash That Killed 71: Report

The Yeti Airlines aircraft which crashed in Nepal last month killing 71 people, including five Indians, lost thrust and fell after the propellers of both engines went into a feathered position, according to a preliminary probe report which lead investigators to suspect human error behind the deadly crash. There were 72 people including four crew members onboard the ATR-72 aircraft when it crashed, but rescue officials have so far managed to recover only 71 bodies with the other missing passenger presumed dead.
